Best Table Saw

What a Table Saw Can Do

A table saw is the heart of any workshop for home users and professional construction workers. It’s usually the first tool people go for when doing wood projects. This indispensable tool is used for wood sizes such as making wood boards wide or narrow, and wood sheets like plywood cuts. It’s also valuable for making specific cuts such as tenons, grooves, and slots. My table saw reviews below will help you decide on what one to purchase for your requirements for the work you do with wood.

Table Saw Techniques

Today’s very best table saws are made with safety features. Always be safe when using a highly dangerous tool.

Table saw guards of plastic are a blocking device between you and the blade and help to keep dust down.

The riving knife is on both sides of the blade with their teeth pointing in opposite directions. If the wood you’re working with kicks back, the blade teeth bite down into the wood stopping the wood from flying out from the saw. Read more about this in my portable table saw reviews below.

Table Saw Wood Cuts

There are only a few cuts you can make with a table saw. These are the rip cut made with the grain of the wood going lengthwise. The best blade for a rip cut has less teeth than on a cross-cut blade.

The circular saw is the only other tool able to cut as well as the table saw but is not as accurate and fast.

The other most used cut is the cross-cut made against the wood grain. These cuts are not as easy to do on a table saw and are easier to do using a miter saw. The cut can still be done using a table saw, but please be cautious since it’s a more dangerous cut.

Make sure your rip fence on the side is lined up with the blade before starting to cut. You can do this by measuring the distance between the rip fence and one tooth on the blade on one end of the rip fence. Next, turn that same tooth toward the other side of the table and measure again. The same number tells you the rip fence is lined up.

Then you want to use the crank to set the height of the blade. It should be a little above the wood thickness of what you’re cutting.

When you’re making a rip cut, look at the rip fence and not the blade to be sure you’re doing a straight cut.

To make the cross-cut against the wood grain, don’t use the rip fence that can cause kickback. Due to the way you hold the board, your hand can get pulled across the blade and be severely injured.

For a cross-cut, put the cross-cutting guide into the grove on your table saw. Use a piece of scrap wood when making the same cut of the same length repeatedly. Simply put the scrap piece to the rip fence setting the distance between it and the blade.

Other cuts table saws are capable of making are beveled, miter, dado, groove, and rabbet.

The rabbet, dado, and other specialty cuts will need special blades for the best clean cut you can make. Rabbets cut on the end or face of wood, dados cut against the grain, and grooves cut with the grain of wood.

Wood cutting with table saw

jigsawA table saw is ideal for making rip cuts and cross-cuts; however, it will disappoint horribly making curved cuts and the best tool for this wood function would be to use a jigsaw.

This model from Black+Decker® uses T- and U-blades for successful cutting.

What You Can Make Using Table Saws

People who love wood and can’t wait to make something create beautiful furniture, cabinets, flooring, shelving, and more. It’s used for trim and moldings. Beginners like making bird houses, house numbers, toy boxes, a sandbox, dog house, picnic table, workbench, and other craft projects. Creative folks can think of a million things to make using a table saw.

Stationary or Portable Table Saws

This information will hopefully be helpful when deciding which type of table saw to buy. Sometimes saw manufacturers use the name, Hybrid Cabinet Saw, or Contractor Saw that is misleading to know what exactly you are buying. My definitions below should give you a good idea of the differences and similarities in these saws.

1. Stationary Table Saws

Stationary Table SawsThe three types of stationary table saws are: cabinet table saws, contractor saws, and hybrid saws with variations in between for smaller saws.

Compared to portable saws, table saws are more powerful and accurate, but much larger and heavier than the portable models.

They can be mounted onto a mobile base to move around in a workshop and can be taken to a job site.

Table saws use belt-drive motors and have heavy cast-iron tables and some are made of aluminum or granite. The tables usually measure 27- x 20-inches with extension tables measuring about 10- x 12-inches.

With advanced features, table saws can have outfeed tables, router tables, extended fence rails, and more. Read more about this Bosch® 4100-10 at #2 below.

2. Hybrid Saws

Hybrid SawsThis sliding table saw type is a blend of the best features of the contractor-style table saw and cabinet-style table saw. These are hard to pigeon-hole creating confusion online as to what they really are.

Older contractor saws had large outboard motors. Hybrid saws have inboard belt-driven induction motors.

These are more middle-of-the-road between the old contractor saws and the standard industrial cabinet saws. To further confuse buyers, hybrids typically have open-leg stands; however, some brand models have full enclosures, such as the Shop Fox® hybrid cabinet saw in the picture to the right. Hybrid saws with full enclosures look the same as cabinet saws.

3. Cabinet Saws

Cabinet SawsThe most powerful of all the saws are the cabinet saws. Their characteristics are greater than all other saw types and they don’t look much different than the hybrid saws.

Cabinet saws are pricey, tough, heavy, and bulky, for heavy-duty use. They are used in professional contractor workshops, factories, and specific schools.

They run on 240-Volts at between 3 and 5 HP. The fences on this saw are more accurate, stout, and vigorous. Few adjustments are ever needed. They are stable due to their weight and can be mounted to a moveable base, but they certainly are not portable.

4. Portable Table Saws

Portable Table SawsThese come in 3 types: compact, bench top, and job-site models. Being designed for portability, these are lightweight and small. To keep the weight down, the tougher and robust materials are decreased. They usually have a direct-drive motor operating on 120-Volts at 15-Amps.

Job-site saws are often called Contractor Table Saws because are more rugged in construction than compact table saws or bench-top saws. They have great fences and adjustments for alignment, usually with the capability of 24-inch rips. Read more about this Bosch® saw at #7 below.

Dust collection ports and riving knives with onboard storage space are standard features with this saw. Many come with stands with or without wheels that fold.

5. Bench-top Saws

Bench-top SawsThese are designed to be affordable, lightweight, and compact to be portable. They can be purchased with or without stands.

These are generally used by those who do light work and fashion wood artsy items.

Being said, the table-top/bench saws are lighter in weight, they are made of aluminum, plastic, and composites. Their rip capacity is reduced having much smaller tables. They will cut soft wood such as pine with smaller sheets of plywood and not full-sized sheets of any wood material. Read more about the SKILSAW 3410-02 at #6 below.

6. Compact Table Saws

Compact Table SawsSimilar to job-site table saws, these are a sawhorse leg-up from the bench-top table saws. Read the review at #4 below for full specifications and features of this Makita® 10-inch compact saw used by contractors and home users.

Compact table saws are light, with direct-drive universal motors. Some are made of cast-iron and some come with stands. The rip capacity and tables are smaller, yet they are still similar and bring to mind the full-size table saws.

7. Motor Types

There are two motor configuration types. The direct-drive are often found in the portable saws. They feature a universal motor that directly drives the blade, and produces a lot of power. Belt-drive are more powerful and featured in the stationary model range of saws.

WORX WX572L BladeRunner X2 Portable Table Top SawThis corded-electric saw is the ideal lightweight and portable with a carrying handle saw for cutting wood, metal, tile, plastic, and aluminum. It’s a small affordable table saw that sells well on Amazon at slightly over $100. It will not cut glass.

It’s a single-speed scroll saw that’s great for home users and is perfect for hobbies and crafts.

This is essentially a saber saw that’s mounted upside down. You’ll get great square ends and miters.

Having a steel rip fence and a large gauge for making accurate cuts, this saw is easy to set up and use for your hands to be free for controlling your cuts. The miter gauge is of course adjustable for left or right cuts from 0- to 60-degree angles.

Like most saws, it too has onboard storage to keep your blades, rip fence, and miter gauge close by. With its conventional riving knife and guard system, you’ll have limitless cross- and rip-cut capacities.

Never worry about this saw starting accidently; it has a safety switch to prevent this.

This saw can be mounted to a workbench, or a table or saw stand with the 2 mounting holes on each side.

SawStop PCS31230-TGP236 Professional Cabinet SawThe SawStop® is the #1 cabinet saw manufacturer in North America. This saw is an Amazon Choice product that’s used by professionals, hobbyists, and craftspeople. It has a 3 HP, single-phase, 220-Volt 60 Hz, 13-Amp belt-drive motor with a 36-inch pro T-glide fence system, rails, and extension table. This corded-electric saw is versatile and safe to use.

This sliding table saw is so smart that it actually knows when someone inadvertently contacts the saw blade when it’s spinning and will stop the blade in 1/200th of a second. You will probably have a nick, but not have your fingers or hands sawed off.

A main power switch is included providing more safety with a lock-out key to prevent unauthorized users from turning on the saw and a large start/stop paddle with hands-free shutoff that can be stopped with your knee, allowing you to safely stop the blade even when both hands are busy.

SawStop Professional Cabinet Saw

With it’s exact fitting and finished 4-inch port dust collector, it sucks up 99% of your dust and wood debris above and below the table.

The riving knife reduces kickback and offers you protection during non-through cuts. The blade is left-tilting stopping wood from binding up against the fence.

The dimensions are 69-1/8-wide x 33-inches deep x 34-inches high. The cabinet footprint is 19-3/8-inches wide x 19-3/8-inches deep.

The cast-iron table size is 20-inches x 77-inches and 44- x 27-inches with its extension wings that are 12- x 27-inches. The cabinet saw weighs 491-pounds.

Plug the UL® listed 3-prong grounded plug into a 220-Volt, 60 Hz outlet anywhere 220-Volts are available. It does not use batteries.

The 3 HP saw is 15-Amps, so a 20-Amp breaker will be okay with nothing else on the circuit.

This unit is not compatible with 50 Hz. It would need some kind of after-market power adapter/transformer. Also, exporting saws out of the country where it is purchased cancels all Warranties states the manufacturer.

This saw runs at about 86 dB with the blade all the way up. Depending on the type and height of the blade and the type of wood, thickness being cut, as well as the speed will vary the noise level.

Tips Using a Table Saw

Table saws are a versatile machine and one of the most useful tools and can be dangerous.

According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, there is a table saw injury every 9-minutes, and 10 amputations every day in the United States. Even the most safety-conscious woodworkers are at risk of an accident. And when that accident happens, the consequences are life-changing: extreme pain and trauma, loss of income-earning abilities, and loss of the ability to pursue hobbies. It’s time to protect yourself.

  • Read your User’s Manual for instructions for installation, tips, and use.
  • Use the right table saw for your work requirements.
  • Always wear closed-toe shoes, eye and ear protection, and a dust mask.
  • I wouldn’t advise wearing gloves with any saw; a friend cut off his fingertips wearing them.
  • Use a cutting guide and use support panels for large sheets of wood. Saw horses are good too, and some come with their own saw stands.
  • Get a 16 AWG extension cord or at least a 12 gauge for 15-Amp power saws.
  • Use a paste wax for aluminum- or cast-iron tops to prevent oxidation and your wood glides through easier. Put wax over plastic gauges as well for protection.
  • Let waste fall freely or into the dust bag is equipped
  • Use your shop vac to vacuum up sawdust quickly.
  • To know the wattage: Watts=Amps x Volts
  • To find the electric horsepower of a motor, use: Horsepower = (Volts x Amps) / 745.7 (does not take efficiency into consideration).
