Best Band Saw Buying Guide
You can’t beat a band saw for your work shop or having if you’re a pro furniture maker, a part-time woodworker, passionate model creator, or in your construction job.
Fashion, design, and construct complex angles, tight curves, or long straight lines. As with any saw, a LED light is convenient for seeing your cut line in dark areas and a dust port is a must for keeping your area free of saw dust and debris.
Below are my 10 best band saw reviews from which to choose the ideal saw for your specific needs and the best band saw for the money.
Prices can vary from a few hundred dollars to $1500 and up. Prices are lower on Amazon.com than at the brand name website. All come with Warranties shown in my best band saws for wood and metal cutting below.
1. What’s a Band Saw Used For?
A band saw is a wonderful addition to your work shop. It can be a stationary unit or a handheld unit as your projects call for. It does freehand cutting for creative and decorative touchs and can cut a round table top perfectly.
A band saw is the most important tool by most cabinet makers, even more treasured than your table saw.
It makes tight curves and scrolls easily for arched trim, decorative curves, chair legs, and seats. It’s depth-of-cut is unsurpassed by any other saw.
A band saw is the perfect tool for cutting thick lumber and is very useful for resawing or thinning your wide stock. For forming seats of chairs, aprons, or any rectilinear cut, the band saw is vital.
2. Band Saw Blades
The blade is shaped similar to a ribbon that is a closed steel loop over two wheels one above the other such as in item #10, below. A motor drives the lower wheel using gears or pulleys.
There are smaller band saws that are used on the top of a bench and can be handheld.
The stand up models have three wheels with the third wheel at the rear. The blade’s movement is triangular, not up and down, and the throat on a small saw is deeper.
3. Benefits Using a Band Saw
Are you thinking about purchasing a band saw for your shop or job? You’ll want to know the benefits of owning a versatile band saw.
- Versatility/Adaptability/Flexibility
- Operation Control
- Blade Choices
- Teeth Choices
I. Versatility/Adaptability/Flexibility
This means that it’s easy for your band saw to cut curves for those table tops you want round to include chair seats.
Compound cuts are easy to do for cutting railings and furniture legs that have curves.
Band saws make depth cuts that cannot be done with any other saw. This gives you the ability to stack lumber pieces for identical cuts.
With your band saw, it’s adaptability lets you thin out wide wood stock easily.
This saw is flexible where you can cut straight-lined cuts for curves, serpentine shapes, chair seats, and aprons.
II. Operation Control
This apparatus uses a blade in the shape of a closed loop with wheels driving this loop powered by a motor and a series of gears and pulleys.
The blade usually moves at 2- 3000 FPM. The blade’s cutting edge is all that’s exposed with the balance of the blade inside the case.
The blade will stay aligned using blade guides with one under the table top adjusting the other guide for various heights over the table if you have that type of band saw.
You can adjust the tension on the blade by adjusting the wheel housing on top. Another adjustment will ensure the blade is always centered on the wheels.
III. Blade Choices
You can identify the best band saw blades by the thickness or gauge, number of teeth, and width.
Larger machines will require wider blades usually. Typical work places will have blades generally from 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch wide. How you plan will determine the many configurations and spacing of the blade’s teeth.
You must know that the curve you plan to cut must have a one-to-one correlation relating to the curve and how narrow the blade is.
An example would be if you want to cut a radius that’s about 1/4-inch, you will need a 1/8-inch wide blade. When cutting a 3/4-inch hole you will use a 1/4-inch blade.
For cutting metal, use a blade with finer teeth for smooth cuts. Conversely, wood cuts best with fewer large teeth. Fine teeth will give you smooth cuts.
IV. Teeth Choices
Band saw teeth types vary as well. Some teeth are similar to a manual hand saw with cutting teeth on both sides and unset raker teeth intermingled between.
Raker teeth seem to be more valuable and successful used on wood.
The wavy-set teeth type are situated in an arrangement consecutively to be one after the other closer rather than farther from the band’s edge. This wavy appearance is used more frequently for cutting metal instead of wood.
The toothless type blades for exceptionally smoother cuts are used for ceramics and plastics. The reason this type works so well is that the blade surface is bonded with tungsten carbide chips.
Note that if you use a relatively small band saw, some of the information above may well not apply to you. Small band saws function best with a narrower blade of 1/2- to 3/4-inch.
For stronger and longer acting blades, purchase bimetal ones. A short strip of electron cobalt steel is applied before the teeth are cut.
The profile of the teeth vary too. Skip-tooth blades with deep gullets are great for general wood working. For a very smooth cut, done at a slower pace, a standard or regualar tooth works best. For a coarser cut at high-speed cutting, use a hook-tooth or saber-tooth blade.
5. Reasons to Use a Portable Band Saw
Being portable and easy to move and manage, this band saw is lightweight. This means you will only need to carry it and not a lot of equipment to use it.
The best portable band saws cut cleanly and quickly and have two power options: battery-powered or corded electric. Let’s take a look at the good and not so good of each option you might be considering.
- Battery-powered portable band saws — are indeed more manuevarable in that there’s no cord to drag along or trip over. It’s easier to use a cordless model in tight or overhead jobs you’re tackling without having a cord in the way or an electrical outlet not available.
- The battery life will regulate how much work you can do if you only have one battery and it dies. Have a spare battery with you for these times to decrease down-time doing your project.
- Electric-corded portable band saws — are a pain when you need to find the electrical receptacle or generator for plugging it in at a job site. Cords get in the way and can be hazardous in certain situations with specific cuts. You will have constant power with no batteries to fret about however.
Whether corded or cordless, it’s your choice for your needs to suit the work you’re doing.
Most battery-powered portable band saws do not come with a battery or charger and are sold separately. However, if you own that brand of tools, the battery is usually compatible with the band saw.
6. Cutting Size
Notice the cutting capacity for band saws where most will cut up to 5-inches thick. Check my product reviews to see the ones that cut only as little as 1-5/8-inch. This is perfectly fine when you only need to cut this small. Be sure to check the cutting capacity you need before you purchase a band saw.
7. Band Saw Plusses
LED Light — Most band saws come equipped with an integrated LED (Light Emitting Diode) because consumers want them. It helps you to see in dark areas with inadequate lighting.
Carrying Cases — Are a convenience yet not all brands provide them. My reviews show which brands have a case and the ones that don’t even provide a case for purchasing period.
Blade — Most brands come with one blade and it’s usually not all that useful. Be sure to purchase the ones you need for the material you are cutting.
Rubber Bumbers — Reminds me of the kids’ bumper cars at the fair. Most all of the band saws have rubber bumpers to protect them from normal use and carrying to and from different places.

Tips Using a Band Saw
If you’re a beginner, you might like some tips for band saw safety and maintenance.
Become familiar with your band saw. Read your User’s Manual completely.
A portable band saw has a trigger comparable to circular saws and drills. The separate speed selector lets the blade move suitable to the material being cut.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves when using a band saw. Pull your hair back if it’s long and remove jewelry or any clothing that can get into the moving blade.
- Before using your band saw, be sure the blade is stretched tightly. This will give you uniform straight cuts.
- Remember to release the band saw’s blade tension when you’re not using the saw. This will prolong the blade’s life, bearings, and other parts. A quick release on many band saws allow for this using the blade’s tension lever.
- The piece you’re working on and the guide bearings must have minimum clearance.
- For a band saw such as #10 above, know how the top and bottom guide assemblies work by consulting your User’s Manual.
- Create cleaner cuts using blades with more teeth.
- You’ll get faster cuts using blades with less teeth.
- Remember that band saws create external cuts. For example, it cannot remove the inside of a round ring.
- Use a vice or person to hold rebar or pipe to keep it from spinning when the blade bites into it. Metal can bind when cutting causing the blade to bind up and you to lose control of the band saw.
- Be sure to mark what you’re cutting at the right angle and mark round pipe around the diameter for a true finished cut.
- Put the saw blade against the stock to be cut so that the blade is parallel to the cut mark you made. It needs to be perpendicular to your stock if square, or at 90-degrees. Be sure to have the shoe of the band saw tightly and securely against your material.
- Squeeze the trigger to cut the stock all the way through. Don’t force the saw. The teeth of the blade can only move so far with each pass.
- Be sure the blade is perfectly aligned slowing it down when you’re almost through your material being cut.
- After releasing the trigger, let the blade stop moving before sitting the saw down.
